The short answer

A clay mask and a sheet mask do different jobs. The Gentle Purifying Mud Mask is a rinse-off clay (British kaolin 10.5%, American bentonite 4%) for skin that gets oily or looks congested. The Rejuvenating Squalane Mask is a single-use essence sheet you wear for 10–20 minutes and do not rinse, for skin that feels dry or tired. Both come from the Purple Line, VVBETTER's extra skincare line. Pick one by how your skin feels this week, not by the word "mask".

Clay mask vs sheet mask at a glance

Both masks sit in the Purple Line, the extra skincare line built around vitality, elasticity and regeneration. They are written for different skin states, so the table is organised around how your skin feels rather than around the line.

What the clay mask does

Kaolin is a soft white clay that takes up excess oil at the surface. Bentonite swells with water and holds on to surface buildup. Together they make up 14.5% of the formula. The rest of the jar is there so the mask does not leave skin feeling stripped, in keeping with VVBETTER's clean and thoughtful formulations, a balanced blend rather than clay alone: squalane, panthenol, bakuchiol, ceramide NP and a peptide complex, with centella asiatica extract, beta-glucan, hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.

It is meant for the days you notice shine by midday, blackheads and pores that look congested, or a rough texture that makes makeup go patchy. Spread an even layer on dry skin after cleansing, avoid the eye and mouth areas, and rinse after 10–15 minutes. Do not let it dry hard beyond the stated time. If a cloudy film stays after rinsing, which is common on oily skin, wash once more with a mild foam such as the 5.5 Soothing Cleansing Foam.

An even layer is the goal: the thicker the layer, the longer it takes to dry.

What the sheet mask does

The sheet is the Purple Line mask for hydration, elasticity and feel. Its four-part complex is plant-derived: squalane from olives, edelweiss callus extract in the place a placenta extract would usually take, PDRN from seaweed rather than salmon, and a collagen-type protein from carrots (hydrolyzed extensin). Around that sit a five-type CICA complex (asiaticoside, madecassic acid, asiatic acid, centella asiatica extract and madecassoside), glutathione and niacinamide, and three types of hyaluronic acid with beta-glucan.

The PDRN is the same marine-plant complex as in the Firming Bakuchiol PDRN Serum, at 2,000 ppm of the complex raw material in the mask against 20,000 ppm in the serum. That makes the mask a way to try vegan PDRN before committing to the serum. It suits dry, rough-feeling skin, or skin that looks less radiant after a long day. One sheet is one use; do not reuse it.

How to choose between them

  • Your skin looks shiny by midday, or pores look clogged: start with the clay, once a week.
  • Your skin feels dry, tight or tired: start with the sheet, two or three evenings a week.
  • Your skin is combination: either can work. Many people use the clay when the T-zone is busy and the sheet when cheeks feel dry, but never both on the same evening unless you have already seen how your skin handles each.
  • Your skin reacts easily: clay once a week at 10 minutes, with a jawline patch test first; or press a sheet on the jawline for 10 minutes before the first full face.
  • You want a fast fix before makeup: neither. The 3–5 minute pad pack from the Balancing Pad is the short option.

You can choose one optional mask step, and choosing one rather than stacking all of them is what we mean by mindful skincare. Owning two formats does not mean they have to be used together or at the same frequency. For exact times and a sample week, see how long to leave each mask on.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Treating clay as a daily step. It is a weekly one.
  • Putting the sheet mask on before toner. The sheet comes after toner.
  • Rinsing the sheet's essence off. Pat it in instead.
  • Applying either near the eyes. Both products say to avoid the eye area.

Quick answers

Is clay too drying for dry skin?

Clay can be, which is why the formula also carries squalane, panthenol, beta-glucan and hyaluronic acid. Dry skin should keep to once a week, rinse before the mask hardens fully, and follow with toner and cream.

Is the PDRN in the sheet mask from salmon?

No. It is a vegan PDRN complex from marine plants, not salmon. The mask carries a vegan certification mark.

Is the Mud Mask vegan?

It does not carry a vegan mark. Among masks, the Squalane Mask does.

Can I use the sheet mask and the clay in the same week?

Yes, on different evenings. Keep the clay to its once- or twice-weekly limit and add sheets on the days your skin feels dry.
